To ensure our communities get back on their feet responsibly, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has officially opened a physical Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Nahunta, operating out of the local Tax Assessors’ Office Space.

This center serves as a centralized operational hub for the entire region, offering two distinct paths for financial recovery:

1. Homeowners & Renters: Low-interest physical damage loans (up to $500,000) are available to directly repair or replace damaged real estate, structures, and personal property destroyed in the blaze.

2. Small Businesses & Agricultural Operations: Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) reaching up to $2 million are open to help small businesses, agricultural cooperatives, and private non-profits overcome the severe financial disruptions and revenue losses caused by the fires and subsequent area closures.

Critically, these recovery paths are open not just to Brantley residents, but to all contiguous counties—which directly includes Ware and Pierce. Additionally, regional housing relief remains active through the Georgia Realtors’ group, which is distributing immediate housing grants of up to $1,000 to displaced families, carrying a strict application deadline of July 15, 2026.

On Friday morning, May 22, 2026, GBI agents took 33-year-old Shacondra Ashley Minor into custody. Minor faces serious criminal charges, including Cruelty to an Inmate (Felony), Violation of Oath by a Public Officer (Felony), and Simple Battery (Misdemeanor).

The state investigation stems from an April 30, 2026, use-of-force incident involving jailers and a female inmate housed at the local facility. According to the GBI report, the inmate sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the encounter that did not require hospital treatment.

As the Ware County Jail administrator was conducting a preliminary internal review of the incident, he noted that the use of force directly violated jail policy and state law. Sheriff Carl James moved swiftly, immediately dismissing Minor from her position at the Sheriff’s Office and contacting GBI Special Agent in Charge Jessica Hamilton on May 5 to launch an independent investigation. Warrants were officially obtained on May 21, and Minor was booked into the Ware County Jail before being released on bond. Minor had been employed with the facility for just over three years.

In a statement regarding the arrest, Sheriff Carl James reinforced the department’s high standards, emphasizing that public trust is sacred and no individual is above the law. Following the completion of the GBI’s independent case file, the matter will be turned over to the Waycross District Attorney’s Office for formal prosecution.

Under a haze of heavy smoke that has blanketed the Southeast, Governor Brian Kemp arrived in Waycross Friday afternoon for a high-level briefing and aerial survey of the catastrophic wildfires currently tearing through Brantley and Clinch counties.

Standing alongside Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo, the Governor delivered a sobering assessment of what he described as the current “most dangerous, biggest” fire situation in the nation. For the residents of this community, his message was one of transparent reality paired with a full mobilization of state power.

A Freak Accident with Catastrophic Consequences

The investigation into the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County has yielded a heartbreaking conclusion. Officials have confirmed that the blaze was sparked by a children’s birthday party balloon that drifted into a live power line. The resulting electrical arc ignited the parched vegetation below, proving just how volatile our environment has become. During this D4 “Exceptional Drought,” even the smallest mishap can trigger a historic disaster.

Brantley County: The Line in the Sand

While the Pineland Road Fire in Clinch and Echols counties is larger in acreage, Governor Kemp made it clear that the Highway 82 Fire is the state’s Number One priority. The reason is simple: Lives and homes. While the Clinch fire burns through deep timberland, the Brantley fire is an “urban-interface” nightmare. It is moving through populated subdivisions and rural neighborhoods where families live, work, and sleep.

As of Friday afternoon, the count of destroyed homes in Brantley has climbed to 87, the most homes lost to a fire in Georgia’s recorded history. The number of structures destroyed has not yet been confirmed. Hundreds of more homes and structures remain directly in the path of the flames.

The “Unstoppable” Truth: Waiting on the Rain

The Governor didn’t sugarcoat the tactical reality. Despite the heroic efforts of our GFC plowing units and the 59+ fire departments on the scene, the fire remains largely “unstoppable” by human hands alone.

“There’s no way to stop this fire,” Kemp stated bluntly. “They’re having to contain the flanks and the back of it and then, hopefully, we get a change in the weather.”

In these conditions, crews aren’t trying to “put out” the head of the fire, which is impossible, but are instead working to steer it away from homes and hold the line until a significant rain event provides the moisture needed to truly kill the heat. Until the heavens open up, our crews are in a defensive battle of containment.

The Highway 82 Fire (Brantley County)

The status of the Hwy 82 Fire remains at State Priority #1 (High Density Residential Threat). 87 homes have been lost. 5,000+ acres have been burned. The fire is currently 15% contained. Over 59 fire departments and GFC units on structure protection duty.

The Pineland Road Fire (Clinch & Echols Counties)

The Pineland Road Fire is an active timberland/rural threat. 35 structures have been lost. 31,307 acres have been burned. The fire is currently 10% contained. This fire is primarily impacting timber industry assets and remote camps.

The Governor expressed deep gratitude for the first responders working in 90-degree heat and the local institutions, like Southside Baptist Church in Nahunta, that have stepped up to house the displaced.

Official reports indicate the situation in Brantley County has escalated significantly, while Clinch County remains under high alert as the regional fire map expands.

Clinch County: Pineland Road Blaze

While Brantley County battles localized threats to homes, Clinch County is home to the state’s largest and most aggressive blaze. The Pineland Road Fire, which ignited northwest of Fargo, has exploded to a massive 16,516 acres and is currently only 10% contained.

The fire is fueled by heavy timber and woody debris left behind by Hurricane Helene. It is exhibiting “extreme behavior,” including long-range spotting where embers fly over fire lines to start new blazes.

The Clinch County EMA has issued urgent warnings for residents along Fargo Highway (from Headlight Road to Tiger Lake Road) and those near U.S. Highway 441 (specifically near Colon).

Mandatory orders are in effect just across the line for Will Rewis Road and the Fruitland area.

The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at the Venture of Faith Camp (1309 GA Highway 135 S, Lake Park, GA).

Brantley County: 5,000 Acres Burned

The Brantley County Sheriff’s Office confirms that wildfire activity has consumed approximately 3,800 acres, with containment holding at only 10%. Local authorities report that roughly 49 homes have been impacted. The fire has since spread to 5,000 acres.

• HWY 82 from Satilla River to Browntown Road

Travel Closures & Advisories: Motorists are urged to avoid Waynesville Road (connecting to Hwy 110 and Hwy 259) and US Hwy 82, which is currently closed from Nahunta to the Glynn County line.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect, creating unpredictable fire behavior. Residents needing extra time to move livestock or those with medical needs are advised to leave now. The recommended evacuation route is Highway 32.

Regional Burn Ban Details

• No Permits: No new burn permits will be issued for the next 30 days (expiring May 22, 2026, unless extended).

• Enforcement: Local law enforcement is authorized to investigate all smoke sightings and issue citations or make arrests for violations.

In the event of smoke or active fire, dial 911 immediately.

The Highway 82 fire, which was reportedly 75% contained earlier today, has been downgraded to 50% containment due to shifting winds and extremely low humidity. The Georgia Forestry Commission is currently battling “extreme fire behavior,” including spotting and wind-driven runs.

Students at Waynesville Primary and Atkinson Elementary have been safely evacuated to the Brantley County Middle School Gym in Nahunta. Parents can pick up their children there but must bring a photo ID for release.

The following roads have been closed:

• Hwy 82: All lanes blocked from the Nahunta red light to Glynn County.

• SR 520: All lanes blocked at Cohen Road (Mile Marker 23).

• Secondary Roads: Browntown Rd, Hawks Landing, Warners Landing, 259, and 110E.

This isn’t just a Brantley County problem. With over 70% of Georgia in extreme drought, these fires are moving faster than traditional firebreaks can stop them.

Smoke from this blaze and the 7,000-acre Pineland Rd fire in Clinch County is creating zero-visibility conditions as far south as the St. Johns River. If you are driving on US-1 or Hwy 82 tonight, treat any smoke-covered road as a hazard.

Arson experts have been called in to investigate at least three suspicious spot fires that ignited over the weekend—one of which started right behind the firefighters’ command post on U.S. 1. For a fire to jump five miles against the wind, it raises red flags.

A 16-mile stretch of U.S. 1 remains a “No-Go Zone” as crews widen firebreaks to protect the tinder-dry timber to our north. A separate 1,300-acre blaze just east of Ware is currently 50% contained. With “Extreme” fire danger ratings (Level 5) and humidity dropping to 15%, the smoke plume is visible across the entire Tri-County area.

Crews are working 24-hour shifts, and Gov. Kemp is scheduled for an aerial tour tomorrow to assess the damage. My advice? Keep your windows up and your scanners on. If you see something suspicious near a firebreak, call it in.
